About

As an early-mid career researcher, I am dedicated to addressing the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). I am particularly passionate about bacterial pathogens classified as ‘critical’ by the World Health Organization, encompassing drug-resistant organisms responsible for severe and often deadly infections. While our understanding of the molecular basis for infectious diseases continue to advance, the clinical translation of newly identified therapeutic drug compounds often faces challenges in demonstrating efficacy within complex infection models. To overcome this barrier, my research team explores the molecular mechanisms underlying how bacteria cause disease and overcome treatment, and develops cutting-edge antimicrobial tools that remain active under challenging conditions in the laboratory settings and live animal models. Our approach seeks to bridge the gap between promising drug discoveries and their successful application in the complex landscape of infectious diseases. Born and raised in Austria, I obtained my PhD in Germany and later moved to Canada to train under the mentorship of world-renowned microbiologist Prof. Bob Hancock. Now as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago, I am privileged to lead a dynamic team comprising 15 researchers. Our collective focus is on elucidating molecular interactions during co-infection, pioneering the development of innovative therapeutics encompassing drug conjugates (peptide-antibiotic combinations, prodrugs), peptides / peptidomimetics and nanomedicines. Our research endeavours extend beyond borders, engaging in collaborative projects with esteemed researchers from all around the globe, including in the USA, Canada, Europe and China. I have authored over 80 articles, securing multiple early career awards, including one of Germany’s most prestigious Feodor-Lynen Postdoctoral Fellowship (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation). I am the lead investigator on projects funded by the three major national funding agencies including the Royal Society Marsden Fund, Health Research Council NZ, MBIE, and the Maurice Wilkins Centre. In addition to my research achievements, I actively contribute to undergraduate education, lecturing courses spanning from 2nd to 4th year. Notably, I attract high-caliber students who share a keen interest in addressing AMR and infectious diseases. My commitment to student mentorship spans over a decade, during which I have trained, guided and successfully completed more than 50 student projects ranging from BSc to PhD levels as well as Postdocs in Germany, Canada, and New Zealand.
